Being Independent: Women of Today's India

An independent woman is strong and secure. She is her own person. Here are some Independent women who engage and challenge our society in a multitude of ways. Chandrani Pearls salutes them for their great contribution.

Agnimitra Paul:

Women who value pulchritude will necessarily flock to Agnimitra Paul, the fashion designer who proves that you can look glamorous and create the same kind of enchantment of those who love their flamboyance.
Agnimitra’s creations reach out to a confident, independent individual who needs to make a western statement while at the same time keeping the Indian exotic touch intact.
She is a MBA from Jadavpur University, topped off by a Diploma from the Fashion School of the Birla Institute of Liberal Arts & Management Sciences, which triggered her launching of her own label INGA.
Simply worked out, that is her own name spelt backwards.

                                                                                                                                               Kiran Bedi:

Kiran Bedi (born Kiran Peshawaria, 9 June 1949) is an Indian social activist and a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. Bedi joined the police service in 1972 and became the first woman officer in the IPS. Bedi held the post of Director General at the Bureau of Police Research and Development before she voluntarily retired from the IPS in December 2007. Bedi was the host and judge of the popular TV series "Aap Ki Kachehri" (English, "Your Court"), which is based on real-life disputes and provides a platform for settling disputes between consenting parties.

Chanda Kochhar:

Chanda Kochhar began her career with ICICI as a Management Trainee in 1984. Since then, she has successfully risen through the ranks by handling multidimensional assignments and heading all the major functions in the Bank at various points in time.
Throughout her time at ICICI, Kochhar has implemented numerous innovative changes to the Indian retail banking industry which have directly contributed to the company becoming a market leader.

Kochhar is also widely acknowledged for her leadership, has been named a ‘Woman of Power’ by the Asian Business Leadership Forum and received the Padma Bhushan Award, the third highest civilian honour by the Government of India, for her services to the banking sector.
